Point Your Skates North this Summer

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Point of PerfectionWe first told you about the Point of Perfection camp in February. Now, spring has sprung and the Point of Perfection Camp is only weeks away!  Located about 3 hours north of the Twin Cities in beautiful Northern Minnesota, the 2010 camp will be held June 13-19 at Breezy Point Resort. This year, skaters even have a chance to win a Zuca bag donated by Riedell (a proud partner of the camp for 9 years!)

Why go to a skate camp?  You’ll learn from some of the best coaches in the world in a group setting or in a private lesson (private lessons are filling up fast!) Some of the great coaches you’ll work with this year include World and Olympic Coach, Kathy Casey, Master Rated Moves in the Field coaches Christine Binder and Brandon Forsyth, as well as Rosie Hanson, Amanda Truax and Director Barb Yackel.

As you participate in activities both on and off the ice throughout the week, you’ll be preparing for the Grand Finale Performance. The theme for this year’s Finale is “Music Melodies and Memories—Gliding Thru Decades of Music.”  Campers staying the full week will have the chance to perform for Breezy Point Resort guests on Friday evening and again for their friends & family on Saturday morning!

Work on Endurance

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

coachA 4-minute free skate can take a lot out of a skater, so endurance is key to a strong program. Be sure to stay strong and concentrate so that you have productive practice sessions. When practicing, always continue to skate after your program is complete. Also, workouts on a stationary bike or treadmill or running outside will be beneficial when you’re not on the ice.

Consistent Conditioning

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

coachAlthough it can be hard for a beginning skater, try to maintain a consistent conditioning program. Doing so will almost certainly help you to perform better in competition. The program you choose should work on your weaknesses and build on your strengths to steadily build your fitness in all areas. But don’t overdo it—you should never train seven days a week.

Work on Flexibility

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

coachSkating is demanding on your muscles and joints. Make sure you are properly stretched and that you continually work on flexibility. Doing so helps to lengthen both the muscles and tendons, which in turn allows your limbs a greater range of movement. This is very important in the prevention of muscle and tendon injuries, and it also promotes grace on the ice.

Get Your Doctor’s Stamp of Approval

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

coachIt’s a good idea to visit your doctor for a physical before you step on the ice, especially if you’ve taken a few months off. Although you may feel fine, a yearly check-up will make sure you are fit to skate. Keeping up to date on your health information will also help minimize any injuries or health issues that arise in the future.
