Make the Most of Your Time Off the Ice

Monday, June 7th, 2010

For figure skaters, off ice training can be just as important as your time on the ice. Of course, you want to spend as much time as possible on the ice mastering cross overs, but incorporating cross training (or off ice training) helps maintain a high level of overall fitness that will benefit your skating. Off ice training gives skaters a chance to work new muscle groups, increase endurance (critical for long programs!) and improve overall strength, flexibility and balance. Plus, it’s fun to mix up your training routine! Off ice training also carries more specific benefits like reducing the chance of an overuse injury and allowing you to work new muscle groups while those most commonly used by skaters rest.

Now that you know the benefits of off ice training, you might be wondering what exercises you can incorporate into your training.  Riedell skaters Kiri Baga and Kate Charbonneau mix stretching, Pilates and ballet into their workouts to help increase flexibility and balance. Some of our Riedell Skates Facebook fans also say they take ballet. There are even skating arenas and dance studios that offer ballet classes specifically for figure skaters. It’s a great way to improve posture, flexibility, alignment and artistic abilities.

Skaters also told us they increase endurance with aerobic exercises like biking, swimming, power walking, jogging and even roller blading and roller skating. (Check out our Roller site to learn more!) These are all great options because not only will they help increase your strength and endurance, but they are low impact activities. Weight training is another way to increase your strength which will pay off on the ice—you’ll be able to skater faster and jump higher!

Remember, when you are looking for fun ways to mix up your off ice training, focus on these four elements: 1) Core strength/Stability 2) Balance 3) Strength/Power 4) Flexibility.

What cross training exercises do you use in your training routine?

Special note: Consult your coach or a doctor before integrating new exercises into your training regimen. They can help determine what is best for you!

Kiriskates

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

It takes a lot to be a figure skater.  Besides the physical and mental strength needed to practice and perform routines, skaters must balance work, school and practice. Plus the added monetary needs for boots, blades, costumes, jackets, skate guards, etc. When Kiri Baga traveled to Washington D.C. to perform at the Fort Dupont Ice Arena last year, she noticed many of the figure skaters were practicing in rental skates and decided that something needed to be done.  Knowing the difference a great boot has on skaters’ potential (especially when it’s Riedell!) she returned home and collected her used skates to give to Washington D.C. skaters in need. This year Kiri, with the help of skaters across the country she meets at exhibitions like Skate for Life, continues to donate skates, costumes, skate guards and everything a young skater needs through the program she now calls Kiriskates.

Pick up a copy of this month’s Skating Magazine to read more about Kiri’s growing impact on young skaters in Washington D.C.

KiriBagaI wore my first pair of Riedell skates when I just 6 years old and I haven’t gone back since!  When I first started skating, I had trouble finding skates small enough for my feet. In fact, my first pair couldn’t even be sharpened because they didn’t fit on the machine! Luckily a Riedell dealer found me a pair of small Gold Stars in a kid’s size 10 and I was hooked! I especially loved the soft leather lining.

Today I wear Custom boots and Pattern 99 blades. The first day I wore them I was able to land all my jumps! Jumping is one of my favorite things about skating and I really love the triple toe. Thanks Riedell for all you help me achieve!

Kiri Baga headed to Tokyo!

Monday, October 19th, 2009

In the final leg of the Junior Grand Prix Series, Riedell Junior skater Kiri Baga delivered a beautiful performance that earned scores high enough to send her to Tokyo, Japan to compete in the Junior Grand Prix Finals December 3 – 6.

You’ll be surprised to learn Kiri arrived in Istanbul only the evening before her performance due to visa issues, causing her to miss her official practice. But, the travel stresses and missed practice were unnoticeable in her performance as Kiri landed a triple flip and floated through her spin and spiral sequences. At the end of the evening, Kiri had earned a score two points higher than her previous best and placed first in the Junior ladies.

Congratulations to Kiri and best of luck in training for the Junior Grand Prix Finals!
